WHEN THE OLD WORLD WAS BROKEN, THE SURVIVORS FLED IN EVERY DIRECTION. AFTER THE WAR, THEY EMERGED FROM THEIR HIDING PLACES, AND BANDED TOGETHER WITH OTHERS FOR SAFETY. OVER THE CENTURIES, THESE GROUPS FORMED DISTINCT WAYS OF LIFE.

EVERANS

GENERALLY GOOD-NATURED, EVERANS ARE RESOURCEFUL PEOPLE INTERESTED IN BUILDING COMFORTABLE AND HAPPY LIVES FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR TOWNS AND VILLAGES. HOW ONE ACCOMPLISHES THIS IS ENTIRELY UP TO THEM, BUT IT USUALLY INVOLVES MAKING AN UNIDEAL SITUATION WORK IN THEIR FAVOR.

EVERANS TEND TO GROW UP IN A VILLAGE OR TOWN, AND EACH COMMUNITY HAS UNIQUE FEATURES BASED ON WHAT WAS SALVAGEABLE IN THEIR AREA. WHEN IT COMES TO OTHER FACTIONS, AN EVERAN WOULD BE AS COMFORTABLE CHATTING WITH A RIVER AS THEY WOULD WITH A SPEAR.

SPEARS

HUNTERS, WARRIORS, MADMEN, MERCENARIES, AND FRIENDS. THE SPEARS HAVE BEEN CALLED ALL OF THESE NAMES, AND EACH TELLS A SMALL PART OF THEIR STORY. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAUNT THE RUINS OF THE OLD CITIES, SLIDING FROM SHADOW TO SHADOW LIKE GHOSTS, INVISIBLE UNTIL THEY STRIKE.

THEY OWE SOME OF THEIR SUCCESS TO THE WEAPON FROM WHICH THEY TOOK THEIR NAME: THE ELECTROSPEAR. MADE OF AN ADVANCED ALLOY, AND HONED TO AN IMPOSSIBLY SLENDER EDGE, EACH ONE HAS THE ABILITY TO CHARGE AND RELEASE AN EMP BLAST CAPABLE OF DISABLING A WAKER. NO ONE IS QUITE SURE WHERE THE FIRST OF THESE WEAPONS CAME FROM, BUT WHAT THE LEGENDS AGREE ON IS THAT THEIR CREATION MARKED A TURNING POINT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE WAKERS.

RIVERS

THE FIRST RIVERS WERE THE PEOPLE WHO TRAVELED WHEN THE WORLD ENDED. IT STARTED WITH THOSE WHO HAD BOATS NEARBY AND KNEW THE WATER — SAILORS AND NAVAL PERSONNEL. GRADUALLY, OTHERS CAME ABOARD, USUALLY THOSE WHO TRAVELED AND TRANSPORTED GOODS OVER LONG DISTANCES; LONG-HAUL TRUCKERS, EXPERTS IN LOGISTICS, ANYONE WHO RECOGNIZED THE IMPORTANCE IN KEEPING THINGS, AND THEMSELVES, MOVING. ANYONE WILLING TO WORK COULD FIND A HOME AND A FAMILY ON THE WATER.

RIVERS SO HIGHLY VALUE COMMERCE AND COMMUNICATION. REGARDLESS OF RIVALRIES, THEY ARE WILLING TO DEAL WITH ANYONE WHO APPROACHES THEM, SO LONG AS THE TERMS ARE FAIR AND THE OUTCOME IS MUTUALLY AGREEABLE. THE ARCHIVISTS FORMED IN THE FIRES OF THE BUILDER WAR, TAKING REFUGE IN AN OFF-GRID FACILITY KNOWN AS THE LA SCIO ARCHIVE. THE FOCAL POINT OF RESISTANCE AGAINST THE BUILDER, LA SCIO RALLIED THE REMNANTS OF HUMANITY… UNTIL THE BUILDER LAUNCHED A DEVASTATING ATTACK THAT DESTROYED THE CITY.

TODAY, LA SCIO IS A BADGE OF HONOR THAT ALL ARCHIVISTS HOLD DEAR. THAT IS, WHEN THEY CAN STOP ARGUING AMONGST THEMSELVES. THOUGH THEY HAVE THEIR OWN PHILOSOPHIES, EVERY ARCHIVIST BELIEVES THAT KNOWLEDGE IS CENTRAL TO THE FUTURE, THAT THEY MUST LEARN, AND IN SO DOING HELP OTHERS. TO BE A DREAMER IS TO SEE OUTSIDE OF THE OLD TECH, TO BE DARING ENOUGH TO STRUGGLE, SAVVY ENOUGH TO EXPERIMENT, AND PRUDENT ENOUGH TO AVOID ANCESTRAL MISTAKES.

THE WAKERS

A MECH MAY HAVE LAIN IN THE DUST FOR YEARS ONLY TO ONE DAY SPRING TO LIFE, WITH A FIZZING OF CIRCUITS AND THE GRINDING OF SERVOS. THESE WAKERS ALWAYS CREATE HAVOC, ZEROING IN ON POPULATION CENTERS OR ADVANCED FACILITIES. THEY RAMPAGE UNLESS STOPPED OR UNTIL THEY SHUT DOWN AGAIN, TWENTY FOUR HOURS LATER, RETURNING TO THEIR SLEEPING STATE. MANY ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DESTROY AND THE SENTINELS HAVE DEVELOPED SUBTLE TACTICS TO DRAW THEM AWAY FROM TOWNS AND VILLAGES UNTIL THE MECHS FALL SILENT AGAIN.

THRALLS

LITTLE IS KNOWN OF THE THRALLS BY MOST EVERANS. MOST GUESS THEY ARE DESCENDED FROM THOSE WHO FLED UNDERGROUND DURING THE BUILDER WAR TO ESCAPE THE MACHINES, BUT THEIR LONG SEVERANCE FROM THE REST OF EVERAN SOCIETY MEANS IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL. THRALLS ARE RARELY SEEN AND BARELY KNOWN, EXISTING MOSTLY AS RUMORS AND HEARSAY. THEY ARE USUALLY ONLY GLIMPSED DURING THEIR INFREQUENT RAIDS, AND IT IS HARD TO KNOW WHAT THEIR CULTURE LOOKS LIKE. CERTAINLY, THEY APPEAR TO NEED FOOD AND TECHNOLOGY AS SUCH AS ANY OTHER EVERAN, GIVEN THAT THESE ARE THEIR MOST COMMON TARGETS DURING THEIR EXCURSIONS TO THE SURFACE.
